Gullah Seagrass Basket

This seagrass basket was handcrafted in the Gullah community of South Carolina. Basket weaving is both an art and a necessity for these descendants of the Africans who were trafficked from the rice coast of Africa. Of all the functions that baskets can perform, the winnowing of rice was of the utmost importance.

Senegalese Basket
