SHEKERE

This Shekere was handmade by Gabrielle Knox on June 19th 2022 during theJOYproject’s Juneteenth celebration. Julion DeAngelo led a skillshare, teaching us how to use dried gourds and beads to create these instruments. The Shekere is a west African instrument first used by the Yoruba people and traveled across the African Atlantic to the Caribbean and South America where it has maintained its spiritual significance. Julion also gifted gourd seeds to theJOYproject and we plan to grow them in the 2023 growing season
